biography

Imogen Kelly is an Australian performance artist, performer, writer, director and sculptor whose multidisciplinary practice spans more than three decades. A pioneering figure in Australian burlesque, cabaret, fetish and underground queer performance, she is internationally recognised as Australia’s Queen of Burlesque and the 2012 World Queen of Burlesque (Miss Exotic World), awarded at the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas. Working across live performance, theatre, writing, film and visual art, Imogen’s practice explores identity, sexuality, the body, transformation, spectacle and the politics of representation. Her work draws on personal history, popular culture, social commentary and the subversive traditions of cabaret, vaudeville and experimental performance. Alongside her performance career, Imogen is an independent director, storyteller and cultural producer with a longstanding interest in preserving Australia's alternative performance histories. Her current creative practice brings together memoir, sculpture, performance and oral history, examining the intersections of art, gender, sexuality, ageing and cultural memory. With a career spanning Australia and the international stage, Imogen continues to create work that challenges conventions, celebrates the extraordinary and gives voice to stories often left outside the cultural record.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF NGURRA

The City of the Blue Mountains is located within the Ngurra (Country) of the Dharug and Gundungurra peoples. MTNS MADE recognises that Dharug and Gundungurra Traditional Owners have a continuous and deep connection to their Country and that this is of great cultural significance to Aboriginal people, both locally and in the region. For Dharug and Gundungurra People, Ngurra takes in everything within the physical, cultural and spiritual landscape – landforms, waters, air, trees, rocks, plants, animals, foods, medicines, minerals, stories and special places. It includes cultural practice, kinship, knowledge, songs, stories and art, as well as spiritual beings, and people: past, present and future. Blue Mountains City Council pays respect to Elders past and present while recognising the strength, capacity and resilience of past and present Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Blue Mountains region.
