Inaugural MTNS MADE Retail Expo: Making Local, Buying Local

Kevina-Jo Smith

Last week, MTNS MADE brought local makers and buyers together for our inaugural Retail Expo at Tibbi Whalan Hall in Katoomba. We created space for conversations, connections and new opportunities for locally made products.

The intimate event brought together a carefully selected group of retail-ready MTNS MADE members with buyers from tourism, cultural and independent retail organisations across the Blue Mountains. Makers shared not only their products, but the stories, skills, materials and processes behind them, alongside the practical information needed to build successful wholesale relationships.

The Expo was deliberately designed as a small first step: an opportunity to listen, learn and explore how MTNS MADE can better connect our skilled creative community with local and regional buyers. Feedback from both makers and buyers will help shape future events, with the ambition of growing the Retail Expo into an annual opportunity for our creative community.

Sometimes supporting our local creative economy begins simply: by looking at what is already being made around us and choosing to bring it a little closer to home. Check out our socials for more info and a peek at who was involved on the day.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF NGURRA

The City of the Blue Mountains is located within the Ngurra (Country) of the Dharug and Gundungurra peoples. MTNS MADE recognises that Dharug and Gundungurra Traditional Owners have a continuous and deep connection to their Country and that this is of great cultural significance to Aboriginal people, both locally and in the region. For Dharug and Gundungurra People, Ngurra takes in everything within the physical, cultural and spiritual landscape – landforms, waters, air, trees, rocks, plants, animals, foods, medicines, minerals, stories and special places. It includes cultural practice, kinship, knowledge, songs, stories and art, as well as spiritual beings, and people: past, present and future. Blue Mountains City Council pays respect to Elders past and present while recognising the strength, capacity and resilience of past and present Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Blue Mountains region.
