High on the northern edge of the Blue Mountains, Bilpin is known for apples, altitude and a strong connection to land. But it’s also home to a growing number of MTNS MADE creatives who work at the intersection of art, agriculture and ecology.

Here, you’ll find visual artists, writers, sculptors, ceramicists, and landscape designers working in studios nestled among orchards, gardens, and wide mountain views. Many are engaged with themes of sustainability, place and deep time — creating work that is both grounded and expansive.

Bilpin’s isolation is part of its strength. It offers space to think, space to grow, and space to make. Artists here often work independently, but remain connected to the wider MTNS MADE network through exhibitions, events and regional collaborations.

The town is also home to art educators and visiting residency programs that foster creative exchange between Bilpin and the rest of the country. Whether it’s experimental sound work, large-scale sculpture, or quiet, detailed drawing — Bilpin’s creative output is as diverse as its landscape.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF NGURRA

The City of the Blue Mountains is located within the Ngurra (Country) of the Dharug and Gundungurra peoples. MTNS MADE recognises that Dharug and Gundungurra Traditional Owners have a continuous and deep connection to their Country and that this is of great cultural significance to Aboriginal people, both locally and in the region. For Dharug and Gundungurra People, Ngurra takes in everything within the physical, cultural and spiritual landscape – landforms, waters, air, trees, rocks, plants, animals, foods, medicines, minerals, stories and special places. It includes cultural practice, kinship, knowledge, songs, stories and art, as well as spiritual beings, and people: past, present and future. Blue Mountains City Council pays respect to Elders past and present while recognising the strength, capacity and resilience of past and present Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Blue Mountains region.
