biography

Jaz Kalman is an emerging visual artist based in the Blue Mountains, NSW, whose practice explores identity and expression through semi-realistic portraiture. A recent graduate of TAFE NSW’s Visual Arts program, Jaz works primarily in drawing and painting, blending traditional techniques with contemporary influences to create bold, character-driven works. Her portraits often draw on pop culture references, infusing familiar imagery with emotional nuance and a sharp eye for detail. Jaz’s interest lies in capturing the quiet tension between internal states and outward appearances, offering viewers a moment of recognition, reflection, or even humour. As she continues to develop her practice, Jaz brings curiosity, technical skill, and a distinct illustrative voice to each piece. She is available for commissions and collaborative projects and is committed to expanding her presence in the regional arts scene. Recent awards include The MTNS MADE Industry Award, Outstanding Achievement in Drawing and Highly Commended in Printmaking from NSW TAFE.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF NGURRA

The City of the Blue Mountains is located within the Ngurra (Country) of the Dharug and Gundungurra peoples. MTNS MADE recognises that Dharug and Gundungurra Traditional Owners have a continuous and deep connection to their Country and that this is of great cultural significance to Aboriginal people, both locally and in the region. For Dharug and Gundungurra People, Ngurra takes in everything within the physical, cultural and spiritual landscape – landforms, waters, air, trees, rocks, plants, animals, foods, medicines, minerals, stories and special places. It includes cultural practice, kinship, knowledge, songs, stories and art, as well as spiritual beings, and people: past, present and future. Blue Mountains City Council pays respect to Elders past and present while recognising the strength, capacity and resilience of past and present Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Blue Mountains region.
