biography

Having lived in the BMs for over 30 years I draw inspiration from the beauty of the local environment for my art practice by developing a deeper personal understanding of how the visual arts profoundly influence the beliefs by which we live. The motivation for my artwork is to promote recognition of environmental and social conditions and the need to re- imagine our relationship to the Earth and each other as one of immanent connection and interdependence – towards developing a new ecology of consciousness by envisioning cultural story in continuity with this South Land of my birth. Such a relationship could be considered spiritual - one which embodies an indigenous spirit, meaning working with nature on nature’s terms. Re-imagining perceptions through art may offer the chance for a new way of responding - awakening a new/old response-ability to environmental destruction and social disintegration. My PhD completed in 2011 investigated the link between creativity and a sense of place. https://drive.google.com/file/d/18UVo7EK5g_KJONiOi_NShYBVavMB8hkN/view?pli=1 Though often created as a series, each wall-hanging design is unique and uses a wide range of fabric types for collage and applique, using machine and hand stitching to sketch details and effects. ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF NGURRA

The City of the Blue Mountains is located within the Ngurra (Country) of the Dharug and Gundungurra peoples. MTNS MADE recognises that Dharug and Gundungurra Traditional Owners have a continuous and deep connection to their Country and that this is of great cultural significance to Aboriginal people, both locally and in the region. For Dharug and Gundungurra People, Ngurra takes in everything within the physical, cultural and spiritual landscape – landforms, waters, air, trees, rocks, plants, animals, foods, medicines, minerals, stories and special places. It includes cultural practice, kinship, knowledge, songs, stories and art, as well as spiritual beings, and people: past, present and future. Blue Mountains City Council pays respect to Elders past and present while recognising the strength, capacity and resilience of past and present Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Blue Mountains region.
